Crime trends
Copper pipes are the targeted item at the moment. There is also an increase in attempted vehicle theft and tampering with vehicles.

There were 8 incidents in Howick. There were 3 incidents in Hilton. There was 1 incident in Merrivale. There was 1 incident in Mpophomeni. There was 1 incident in Howick West.
KSS Incidents 31 January – 11 February 2021
31 January 2021 10:49 Main Street (Howick) The KSS Control Room was advised about a break-in. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that the fence had been cut and copper pipes stolen. SAPS were formally advised. A case was opened.
3 February 2021 11:00 Exchange Lane (Howick) The KSS Control Room was advised about a break-in. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that wires and a brass tap had been stolen. SAPS were formally advised. A case was opened.
4 February 2021 11:30 D174 off Boston Bulwer Road (Mpophomeni) The KSS Control Room was advised about a break-in. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that items had been stolen from an unalarmed shed. The suspects gained access by climbing over the wall. SAPS were formally advised.
6 February 2021 04:02 Patterson Road (Hilton) While on a patrol, an alert KSS Reaction Officer noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road. The KSS Officer also noticed that a gate to one of the properties had been derailed. The KSS Control Room contacted the client and it was established that suspects had attempted to steal the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered. SAPS were formally advised. A case was opened.
6 February 2021 10:10 Main Street (Howick) The KSS Control Room received a call from a client requesting assistance. KSS Response units were dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that garden implements had been stolen. As per the client no need for SAPS.
7 February 2021 08:27 Hilton (UCSI camera alert) The UCSI contacted KSS, SAPS and Sompisi Protection Services for assistance as a stolen vehicle had entered Hilton. The vehicle exited Hilton and the UCSI picked up a hit in Merrivale. The vehicle was located by KSS and followed into Mpophomeni where SAPS and Sompisi assisted with the arrest of the suspect. The vehicle was impounded. SAPS took over the processing of the incident.
7 February 2021 22:45 Exchange Lane (Howick) KSS Controllers monitoring the on-site CCTV cameras picked up suspicious movement in the yard. KSS Response units were dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that vehicles had been tampered with. Access to the yard was gained through the fence which had been cut. Nothing was stolen. SAPS were formally advised.
8 February 2021 09:09 Main Street (Howick) The KSS Control Room received an alarm activation. KSS Response units were dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that copper pipes had been stolen. The client was advised and the water turned off. SAPS were formally advised. A case was opened.
8 February 2021 16:20 Drew Avenue (Howick) The KSS Control Room received a call from a client requesting assistance. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officer reported that a suspect had broken into some properties in the area, but had been knocked over by vehicle when exiting. Midlands EMS were dispatched to assist. SAPS were formally advised. KSS handed the incident over to SAPS.
8 February 2021 17:45 Corner Main and Bell Streets (Howick) The KSS Control Room received a panic activation. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officer reported that a suspect had been apprehended for shop-lifting. As per the client no need for SAPS.
9 February 2021 11:00 Lawton Road (Howick) The KSS Control Room received a call from a client advising that copper pipes had been stolen. A KSS Response unit and SAPS were dispatched. A case was opened.
10 February 2021 04:03 Cedara Road (Hilton) The KSS Control Room received an alarm activation. A KSS Response unit was dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that a window had been broken. SAPS were formally advised.
11 February 2021 05:00 Prospect Road (Howick West) The KSS Control Room received a call from an on-site KSS Security Guard requesting assistance for truck driver who had just had his truck hi-jacked. KSS Response units were dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that the truck had been hijacked on the N3 near Hilton, but the driver had managed to escape near Howick and run to safety. KSS Response units and SAPS patrolled the N3 and surrounding areas and located the truck near Tweedie. A cell phone and other small items had been stolen. The truck driver was escorted by SAPS to Mooi River. A case was opened.
11 February 2021 12:59 Zeederberg Road (Merrivale) The KSS Control Room received a panic activation. KSS Response units were dispatched. The KSS Officers reported that a customer had been scammed of a large amount of money by two suspects driving a silver VW Polo with a NR registration. The UCSI was advised and the vehicle was loaded onto the UCSI SNIPR system. The customer reported that the suspects were using a card machine made by YOCO. The bank involved was advised about the matter and confirmed that they would investigate a case of fraud. SAPS were formally advised. A case was opened.
